TMT – LEADING THE WAY FOR SENSOR TECHNOLOGY

On June 23, 2008 the City of Cape Town awarded the NON INTRUSIVE SENSOR tender to Traffic Management Technologies.

23 Wavetronix SmartSensors HD were ordered to reduce the traffic congestion on the N2 highway in Cape Town. All these sensors will be installed from Cape Town City Centre to the R300.

eThekwini Municipality (Durban) followed suite , awarding an order for 5 Wavetronix SmartSensors HD to Traffic Management Technologies to improve their traffic management systems. These sensors are currently being installed along the M4 highway in Durban.

SmartSensor HD is the first high definition detective device in the industry and it represents a huge leap in technology with features that include:

  • State-of-the-art radar systems that gives the device five times the resolution of previous generations
  • A dual-radar design that enables accurate per vehicle speed measurements even at low speeds (less than 5km/hr)
  • PocketPC® - based configuration software that makes field configuration quicker and easier than ever before

In addition to these innovative features, SmartSensor HD also provides and extended detection range of 85 meters, up to ten lanes of simultaneous traffic detention, and new, never – before – available measurements for 85th percentile speeds, average headway, and average gap.

Some advantages:

  • This new technology is also easy to maintain
  • No cleaning or adjustment is required
  • Microwave is not affected by high humidity, rain, fog or dust and requires no cleaning
  • Any road configuration changes can be adjusted from the control room over the data connection. There is no need to send a technician out to make adjustments.

The SmartSensor HD was designed to be extremely reliable and does not require preventative maintenance or repairs.

  • Super capacitors are used to keep the on-board memory and real-time clock alive during extended power failures. This was particularly selected over lithium batteries, because it is more reliable and has a life expectancy of over 20 years.
  • The enclosure is made from high quality UV stable plastic
  • There is no wiring or complicated mechanicals inside that may deteriorate with vibration
  • The whole sensor is manufactured utilising the highest quality printed circuit board materials and technology

Calibration and adjustment is much simpler and completely fool proof compared to the exiting sensors of the City of Cape Town.

The alignment of the sensor can even be monitored right from the control room while being installed.
